Big Sandro Tonali development confirmed – sources confirm Newcastle stance

The Football Association have confirmed that Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct following breaches of their betting rules.

Tonali is currently serving a 10-month worldwide ban from football that was imposed on him in October – but will see him return to action next season.

However, he is now facing FA charges for betting on matches between a period of 12 August 2023 and 12 October 2022. Despite the charges – which were confirmed via the FA in a statement on Thursday,

Newcastle sources have confirmed to HITC that they do not believe that these charges will result in a further ban for the Italian.

An FA statement confirmed the charges and read: “Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules.

“It’s alleged that the Newcastle United midfielder breached FA Rule E8 50 times by placing bets on football matches between 12 August 2023 and 12 October 2023.

“Sandro Tonali has until 5 April 2024 to respond.”

Newcastle believe that Tonali’s ban that came from the Italian authorities covers all aspects of his betting and they are confident at this stage that this is nothing new.

In response, The Magpies issued their own statement via their X account.

“Newcastle United acknowledges a misconduct charge received by Sandro Tonali in respect of alleged breaches of FA Betting Rules.

“Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations and he retains the club’s full support. Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”

It remains to be seen whether any potential punishment from the FA would be seen as served concurrently with his current suspension, of if his ban could be extended.

As it stands Tonali is due to return to action for Newcastle in August.
