Title-winning director says he plans to sign £21m ‘good player’ from Tottenham

This is not the first time the title-winning director has spoken openly about potential discussions with Tottenham Hotspur.

Dennis te Kloese admitted, during the summer of 2023, that Spurs had offered him a role in North London following the contentious departure of Fabio Paratici. The Premier League giants had also come calling for Arne Slot – the manager who ended Feyenoord’s six-year wait for an Eredivisie title – before handing the reigns to Ange Postecoglou.

This time, the interest is not coming from Tottenham’s side, but from Feyenoord’s. Following the departures of Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez, Ivan Perisic and co, Spurs are expected to enter the next stage of an overdue squad overhaul in the coming months, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Giovani Lo Celso and co among those who may be up for grabs.

Bryan Gil‘s departure, meanwhile, feels as likely as it does necessary, the silky Spaniard playing fewer than 200 minutes of league football under Postecoglou. It is hard to imagine that things will get any easier for him too, especially with Tottenham looking to extend Timo Werner’s stay on loan from RB Leipzig, HITC understands.

Tottenham Hotspur may let Bryan Gil go

Manor Solomon’s agent claims that he too is part of the club’s long-term plans despite a lengthy injury absence, while we have been told that Tottenham remain very keen on the £25 million-rated Club Brugge starlet Antonio Nusa.

Spurs are likely to be open for offers for Gil, then, though it remains to be seen if Feyenoord can stump up the sort of fee required for a man who set the club back £21 million, and still has two years left on his contract.

“That has been the case for several transfer windows,” the club’s technical director tells ESPN when asked about Feyenoord’s interest in Gil.

“We are looking, again, at what is possible. We offer a fantastic platform to give boys a good continuation of their career, or to prove themselves again. Gil is a good player, but there are many more clubs are looking at that boy.”

Gil joined Tottenham during the short-lived reign of Nuno Espirito Santo, with Erik Lamela moving to Sevilla as part of the deal. Should the seldom-seen 23-year-old depart for Rotterdam, he may be tasked with replacing Yankuba Minteh.

Minteh has been an outstanding addition on loan from Newcastle United, but HITC have been told that The Magpies are planning to introduce him into their first-team squad from this summer onwards, meaning a replacement will be required at Feyenoord.

“There was a bit of interest in Bryan (in January). A bit of interest in a lot of our players. But I’ve said this before, it is not my role to push people out in that kind of situation,” Postecoglou told Football London a few months ago, insisting that any decision over his future will be Gil’s to make.

“I still very much regard them as our players, and Bryan is a fantastic young player. He works so hard to improve every day and, this first half of the (season), he’s had a couple of injuries. People shouldn’t underestimate that. Especially in a set-up like ours where most of the guys who had a strong pre-season are the ones that hit the ground running.

“He missed out on that but he wants to improve, loves the environment and we love having him part of the group. He’s still a young player with plenty of time to develop and happy to have him around for this second half of the year.”
