Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid predictions

When the going gets tough, Real Madrid get going. Not for the first time, the Blancos have stepped up when it matters most.

No one can pretend that Carlo Ancelotti’s side were not outplayed by Manchester City in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final. But Madrid hung on at the Etihad Stadium for a 1-1 draw after extra time, then triumphed on penalties.

A few days later, a last-gasp winner from Jude Bellingham earned Madrid a 3-2 victory over Barcelona. The Clasico bragging rights belong to them after victories in both La Liga meetings this term.

The result last Sunday was more consequential than that, though. A Barcelona win would have moved them within five points of top spot.

Instead, Madrid’s success means they are now 11 points clear of their arch-rivals at the summit of the standings. The La Liga title is on its way back to the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Madrid have not yet sealed the deal mathematically, but a return of seven points from the last 18 available would see them crowned champions for a record-extending 36th time. If Barcelona do not win all their remaining matches, they will not even need that many.

Victory in the Clasico has brought Madrid some breathing space that could prove important in their quest to win a 15th Champions League.

Ancelotti is now able to dedicate his full attention to the Champions League. The first leg of their semi-final against Bayern Munich will take place on Tuesday at the Allianz Arena. It would only be natural for Madrid to have half an eye on that game as they prepare to take on Real Sociedad.

That is an important factor from a betting perspective. There is a good chance that Madrid will name a rotated XI in San Sebastian, a decision which may affect the outcome of the encounter.

Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid betting tips

Real Madrid minds could be elsewhere ahead of their Champions League clash with Bayern Munich next week.

Draw - 11/5 (Betfred)

Real Sociedad still have something to play for as the end of another La Liga campaign grows ever closer.

A 10-point deficit to the top four means la Real will not be playing Champions League football next season, as they did this term.

They are well positioned to qualify for the Europa League, though. Since Athletic Bilbao have already booked their place via victory in the Copa del Rey, it looks like sixth and seventh will be the qualification berths.

Real Sociedad are currently sixth, three points clear of Real Betis and four ahead of Valencia. One member of that trio looks set to miss out.

La Real have a tough run-in, featuring meetings with each of Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. They must also face both Real Betis and Valencia, head-to-head clashes that could decide the outcome of the battle for the Europa League.

If Madrid do shuffle their pack here, Real Sociedad have what it takes to avoid defeat. Yet the Blancos have only lost one game all season, so a draw is the best pick.

Over 2.5 goals - 23/20 (BetVictor)

Real Madrid are the leading scorers in La Liga with 70 goals so far. Their backline has been breached on only 22 occasions, the lowest figure in the Spanish top flight.

Real Sociedad’s matches average exactly 2.5 goals, while Madrid’s equivalent figure is 2.88.

Those are not the highest numbers in the division, but it demonstrates why odds of 23/20 are worth taking up.

Real Sociedad will be buoyed if Madrid’s starting line-up is less than full strength, so there is no need for them to be fearful of the champions-elect.

That sort of attitude could produce an entertaining encounter in the Basque country.

Joselu to score any time - 3/1 (bet365)

After Karim Benzema departed last summer, Real Madrid chose to sign a stop-gap replacement as opposed to a long-term one.

That man was Joselu. The 34-year-old had a stint with Madrid early in his career and, after spells with Stoke City, Newcastle United, Alaves and Espanyol, he must never have expected he would get a second chance.

The striker has only started 14 games in all competitions. He tends to begin the biggest matches on the bench, such as both meetings with Barcelona and all four Champions League knockout contests.

But Joselu started the reverse fixture and he will probably be back in the XI for this trip to the Reale Stadium, with Ancelotti set to rest at least one of Vinicius Junior and Rodrygo.

Considering he has only featured from the first whistle 14 times, a goal return of 14 is very respectable. In La Liga, Joselu is averaging a strike every 164 minutes.

Even a rotated Madrid side will create chances on Friday, so round off your betslip with this selection.
