Manchester United's defending was branded 'horrendous' and 'atrocious' as an inspired Crystal Palace thrashed them 4-0 on Monday night.

Michael Olise, who has been linked with a move to United this summer, scored twice in a dazzling display as the Red Devils were completely outplayed at Selhurst Park.

Olise netted the opener in the 12th minute and made it 4-0 with 24 minutes left, while Jean-Philippe Mateta and Tyrick Mitchell were on target in between for Oliver Glasner's rampant Eagles.

It was another sorry display from Erik ten Hag's side and eighth-placed United are now firmly on course for their lowest ever Premier League finish.

United finished seventh in 2013-14 - the first after the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson - on 64 points, but they can no longer reach that total and trail sixth-placed Newcastle by two points with three games left.

Ten Hag, whose side are in the FA Cup final later this month, remains convinved he is the right man for the job but conceded this had been the lowest point of their season.

"It is very disappointing. Under-performing. Definitely the worst defeat. We should have done better," he said post-match.

"We are aware, as a team performance, we were not correct, making big mistakes and not following the plan and the script and the rules we have.

"Yes (a low point), it was very poor how we gave the goals away, especially when we prepare the team and the conceding of the first goal is very disappointing."

United arrived in south London without Harry Maguire and captain Bruno Fernandes, with veteran Jonny Evans partnering Casemiro in defence.

Both ended up on the deck in the first half as Olise left Casemiro for dead to open the scoring.

After receiving the ball from a throw-in, the 22-year-old was met by Casemiro in midfield.

However, with a slight feint of the hips, the Brazilian was left bamboozled when he leapt in to tackle only to end up on the deck.

Olise did not waste a moment, racing toward goal but no United player closed him down, urging him to shoot to which he obliged, burying his effort into the corner past Andre Onana.

Palace then scored a second before half-time through Jean-Philippe Mateta, who dashed past Jonny Evans with ease before smashing his effort past Onana at his near post.

Tyrick Mitchell added a third after the break before another superb Olise strike made it 4-0, while talkSPORT's pundits were not happy.

Speaking on talkSPORT, former Liverpool star Danny Murphy was critical of Evans, saying: "Jonny Evans' tackle was horrendous and the goalkeeper, I don't know what he's doing...

"It's bizarre defending from Evans. Decent strike but it can't go in from there. And Evans, he's an experienced player, you can't just dangle a leg out."

Murphy had earlier lambasted Casemiro for the opener, labelling his efforts: "Absolutely atrocious defending."

He was not the only one, as Jamie Carragher called on the Brazilian to leave the club and see out his career in MLS or Saudi Arabia.

They were not the only ones shocked by the level of defending on show with United fans taking to social media to show their fury.

That included talkSPORT's Mark Goldbridge, who wrote: "Casemiro thinks he's on holiday. Absolutely shocking slide tackle on Casper the Ghost."

Another replied: "Michael Olise has just ended Casemiro career. He’s done."

And this fan said: "Casemiro is not the same player as we saw him last season. What happened to him?"

After the arrival of Sir Jim Ratcliffe at Old Trafford as a minority shareholder, big changes are expected at United in the summer including the players.

Casemiro, who has two years left on his contract, could be made available to make room for a younger midfielder with OGC Nice star Khephren Thuram linked.

Olise is also reportedly on the shopping list at United, who will not be alone in their pursuit of the former Reading ace, with Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham all linked.
